Bayer Leverkusen has suffered another setback with the injury of forward Victor Boniface. The Nigerian international sustained a thigh injury while playing for his national team.
Coach Xabi Alonso confirmed the news, stating that Boniface would miss several games, potentially for the remainder of the year. The injury is particularly disappointing as the 23-year-old has been a key player for Leverkusen this season, scoring six goals in ten Bundesliga appearances.
Boniface’s absence adds to Leverkusen’s injury woes, with Amine Adli already sidelined until January. The club will likely rely on Patrik Schick to lead the line, while young talents Artem Stepanov and Francis Onyeka may be called up from the Under-19 team.
This is the second time Boniface has been injured while on international duty this year. He missed the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year due to a similar injury.
Nigeria recently concluded their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, securing a place in the next tournament. Boniface played in both of their final matches but aggravated his injury in the second game.
Alonso expressed concern over Boniface’s decision to continue playing despite feeling discomfort. The coach emphasized the importance of player health and urged caution when dealing with injuries.
