Dala’s double strike propels Angola to brink of AFCON last 16

In a gripping Africa Cup of Nations encounter on Saturday, Gelson Dala’s brace propelled Angola to a 3-2 victory over Mauritania, bringing them closer to securing a spot in the tournament’s last 16.

Dala opened the scoring for Angola in the 30th minute in Bouake when a loose ball from a corner found its way to him, and his acrobatic effort, though scruffy, bounced over two defenders on the line.

Mauritania’s response came from Sidi Bouna Amar, who skillfully weaved through the Angola defense before delivering a precise low finish to level the score. However, Dala once again displayed brilliance early in the second half, ensuring Angola regained the lead.

Mauritania’s defensive lapse cost them dearly, with Gilberto seizing the ball inside the area and his shot deflecting in off center-back Lamine Ba.

Aboubakary Koita’s powerful strike from 20 meters reignited Mauritanian hopes for a comeback, but Angola held firm as Neblu made a crucial save, denying Amar a second goal in the contest.

Angola, previously drawing 1-1 with Algeria, broke a nine-game winless streak in the tournament dating back to 2012. With four points, they now lead Group D ahead of Burkina Faso on goal difference.

To secure a spot in the knockout rounds, Angola only needs a draw against the Stallions in their final group fixture on Tuesday in Yamoussoukro.

Defending champions Algeria, with two points from consecutive draws, find themselves trailing behind. Meanwhile, Mauritania, having suffered a defeat to Burkina Faso on Tuesday, remain winless in eight AFCON attempts.

Amir Abdou’s Mauritanian squad faces a crucial match against Algeria in Bouake next week, needing a victory to enhance their chances of progressing as one of the four best third-placed nations.
