Egypt hopes to host a World Cup group in 2034

Egypt has formally requested to host group-stage matches during the 2034 FIFA World Cup, set to be held in Saudi Arabia.

Hany Abo Rida, president of the Egyptian Football Association, made the announcement at the CAF extraordinary general assembly in Cairo.

He praised Saudi Arabia’s impending “historic edition,” while expressing Egypt’s desire to participate.

Abo Rida urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to grant Egypt the “honour of hosting and organising one of the World Cup groups in 2034.”

This request arrives as Saudi Arabia prepares to be the sole host of the tournament.

The 2034 World Cup holds particular significance for Egypt, marking the centenary of their historic 1934 World Cup debut in Italy.

Saudi Arabia secured the 2034 hosting rights uncontested, confirmed by the FIFA Congress in December.

This win places them as the third Arab nation to host the World Cup, following Qatar in 2022 and Morocco’s co-hosting in 2030.

Egypt had previously explored hosting the 2034 tournament and also unsuccessfully bid to co-host the 2030 edition.
