Kenya’s sports minister to face parliamentary inquiry

Kenyan Sports Minister Ababu Namwamba is set to appear before a parliamentary watchdog on Wednesday in response to accusations of mismanagement, as announced by the parliamentary committee.

Having assumed the position in October of last year, Namwamba faces allegations of inadequate efforts in addressing the challenges confronting the troubled national swimming association.

“It is notified that… the Cabinet Secretary for Youth, Sports and the Arts will respond to questions in plenary on Wednesday afternoon,” said the parliamentary committee probing the allegations.

Since 2019, the Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF) has missed the election deadlines established by World Aquatics, resulting in the East African nation’s exclusion from all global aquatics events.

Accusations of bias have been directed at the KSF concerning the selection of swimmers for national, regional, and continental competitions.

In the previous year, World Aquatics formed a committee to oversee the operations of KSF, directing the organization to appoint a fresh leader.

The move aims to eventually revoke the ban, allowing Kenyan swimmers to take part in the upcoming Paris Olympics and the World Aquatics Championships scheduled for Doha next year.
