Libya football federation hires Aliou Cisse as head coach

The Libyan Football Federation announced on Tuesday the appointment of Aliou Cisse as the new head coach of the national team.

Cisse, the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner with Senegal, takes over the reins from Nasser Al-Hadhiri, who was appointed in September 2024.

Cisse, 48, is regarded as one of Africa’s top coaches and will lead Libya until 2027.

The federation hailed his appointment, calling him “the best coach in Africa,” though it did not disclose the details of his contract.

The official presentation of Cisse will take place on March 13 in Tripoli, marking the beginning of his tenure.

Despite missing out on qualification for the upcoming AFCON in Morocco, Libya remains in contention for the 2026 World Cup, sitting second in their qualifying group.

Cisse’s first challenge will be a crucial World Cup qualifier against Angola later this month, as Libya aims to build on their promising position in the group.
