In a landmark decision announced on Thursday, FIFA awarded hosting rights for the next five editions of the U-17 Men’s World Cup to Qatar.
The tournaments will be held annually from 2025 to 2029, coinciding with the expansion of the competition from 24 to 48 teams.
This move aligns with FIFA’s recent trend of expanding major tournaments.
The 2026 Men’s World Cup will also feature 48 teams for the first time, and last year’s Women’s World Cup saw an increase from 24 to 32 participating nations.
Morocco will take center stage for the U-17 Women’s World Cup, hosting five editions of the tournament from 2025 to 2029.
This coincides with the competition’s own expansion to 24 teams.
FIFA’s selection of single host nations for multiple editions is motivated by efficiency and sustainability.
This approach allows them to leverage existing infrastructure in each country, minimizing the need for extensive new development.
Both Qatar and Morocco boast experience in hosting major football tournaments. Qatar successfully staged the 2022 Men’s World Cup and recently stepped in to host the 2023 Asian Cup.
Morocco has co-hosted the Club World Cup on multiple occasions and is set to hold the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Additionally, Morocco will partner with Spain and Portugal to co-host the 2030 World Cup, with a celebratory element involving three matches played in South America.
