Negotiations for a new contract with national coach Jose Peseiro are underway, announced the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
“His contract ended in July and we’re now talking to him and his lawyers,” NFF president Ibrahim Gusau said on Wednesday.
Having initially been on a one-year contract, Peseiro’s negotiations were hindered due to the postponement of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which the contract was contingent upon, explained Gusau.
Scheduled for January and February, the competition will take place. Peseiro has successfully guided Nigeria to qualification with a game in hand.
Sources have indicated that the NFF is urging Peseiro to agree to a substantial reduction in his monthly salary of $70,000 as part of a new contract that would extend at least until the conclusion of the competition in Ivory Coast.
“We hope to conclude very soon and a decision will be made based on the recommendations of the technical committee,” said Gusau.
Gusau mentioned that the contract of Randy Waldrum, coach of the country’s women’s team, has also concluded after he guided them to the Round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
He mentioned that a decision on Waldrum would also need to be made soon, as the team is set to commence their qualification campaign for the 2024 Paris Olympics next month.
