Senegal parts ways with Cisse after nine years

Aliou Cisse, who led Senegal to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021, has been dismissed as the national team’s coach after a nine-year tenure.

The decision comes following a disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and increasing pressure from fans and media.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced the termination of Cisse’s contract on Wednesday, citing a failure to meet performance targets and concerns about the team’s style of play.

Despite recent victories, the FSF felt a change was necessary to maintain the team’s competitiveness and connection with the Senegalese public.

Cisse, who was also a captain of Senegal’s golden generation that reached the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, had led the team to two World Cup appearances and an Africa Cup of Nations title.

However, the recent downturn in results and criticism from various quarters ultimately led to his dismissal.

An interim technical team will now take charge of Senegal for their upcoming Cup of Nations qualifiers against Malawi.

The FSF has not yet announced a permanent replacement for Cisse.
