In a thrilling second one-day international on Monday, Sri Lanka’s spinner Maheesh Theekshana showcased exceptional bowling prowess, securing impressive figures of 4-31. Despite Zimbabwe’s skipper Craig Ervine contributing a solid 82, the team was ultimately bowled out for 208 in Colombo.
Opting to bat first, Zimbabwe seemed poised at 182-4, with Ervine orchestrating key partnerships, notably a 67-run fifth-wicket collaboration with Ryan Burl, who scored 31. However, the batting lineup crumbled after Ervine’s departure, losing the last six wickets for a mere 26 runs.
Ervine’s left-handed brilliance was highlighted by a remarkable catch taken by Sadeera Samarawickrama. The Sri Lankan fielder executed a one-handed dive to his right at extra cover, dismissing Ervine off the bowling of fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera.
Despite a stumping opportunity, Ervine managed to survive a scare when Kusal Mendis, his counterpart, failed to cleanly collect the ball. At that point, Ervine was on 29, eventually going on to achieve his 20th half-century and his fifth as captain.
Theekshana’s exceptional performance was complemented by the team’s other bowlers, with Jeffrey Vandersay, making a remarkable comeback, and Chameera each claiming two wickets.
Inclement weather had disrupted the first game between the teams on Saturday, resulting in a washout due to rain. With a looming threat of adverse weather conditions once again, the final game is scheduled for Thursday, leaving fans eager for an exciting conclusion to the series.
