Uganda’s Kitara falls to Al Hilal in two-legged clash

Kitara of Uganda struggled in their CAF Confederation Cup qualifier, losing 3-2 to Al Hilal Benghazi in Libya on Friday.

The east African side played both legs in Libya and were eliminated 6-4 on aggregate.

Kitara lost the first leg 3-2 last weekend and couldn’t recover in the return match.

Despite two international stadiums in Uganda, none were available, forcing Kitara to choose Libya over a neutral venue.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime in the second leg, Kitara sparked hope when Titus Ssematimba equalized at 50 minutes, closing the overall gap to just one goal.

However, two quick goals from Hemeya Tanjy ended their chances.

Denis Omedi scored for Kitara 10 minutes from time, but it was too late as they bowed out in eastern Libya.

Al Hilal, who reached last season’s group stage, will now face Al Masry of Egypt in the final qualifying round.

Al Ahly Tripoli, another Libyan team, also progressed with a 3-1 home win over Zanzibar’s Uhamiaji, advancing 5-1 on aggregate.

They’ll meet Simba of Tanzania next, who are favorites to win the competition.
