World record-breaking hurdler Tobi Amusan has been selected to carry the Nigerian flag at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, the country’s sports ministry announced today.
This marks a significant honor for Amusan, who becomes the first athlete from the track and field team to hold this role in 20 years.
The last time an athlete from this discipline carried the Nigerian flag was at the 2004 Athens Olympics when Mary Onyali was bestowed with the honor.
Alongside this announcement, the Nigerian Olympic Committee has named badminton player Anuoluwapo Opeyori as the general team captain.
“Tobi Amusan and Anuoluwapo Opeyori have demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment to their respective sports,” said Nigerian Sports Minister John Enoh in a statement.
“Their leadership will be invaluable as Team Nigeria strives for success at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”
Amusan, the 27-year-old world champion, faced uncertainty about her participation in the Paris Olympics after facing doping allegations.
However, she was cleared to compete in June following a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The hurdles star, who holds the world record in the 100-meter hurdles, is also the reigning Commonwealth and African champion in the event.
Opeyori, on the other hand, brings a wealth of experience to his role as team captain, having won multiple titles at the African level and representing Nigeria at the Tokyo Olympics.
As Nigeria prepares to compete on the global stage, the country’s hopes for success rest on the shoulders of these two accomplished athletes.
