Zimbabwe’s hopes hang by a thread as Ireland eyes Test win

Ireland is just three wickets away from securing victory in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club. With Zimbabwe needing 109 more runs to claim an improbable win, the Irish team is closing in on a hard-fought triumph.

Zimbabwe ended the day at 183-7, with play being cut short due to bad light. The fourth day was plagued by intermittent rain, which delayed the match’s progress.

At the start of the day, Zimbabwe was reeling at 38-3, still trailing by 254 runs. Ireland’s Matthew Humphreys was instrumental in their progress, claiming 4-41 and dismantling Zimbabwe’s lower order.

Wessly Madhevere, however, kept Zimbabwe’s slim hopes alive with an unbeaten 61. He shared a 65-run partnership with Brian Bennett for the fifth wicket and then added another 56 runs with captain Johnathan Campbell.

Madhevere will resume on Monday with Newman Nyamhuri, who has five runs, as Zimbabwe looks to mount an unlikely comeback. With Ireland just three wickets from victory, the outcome hangs in the balance.
