31 human rights groups warn of SAF atrocities in Khartoum

A coalition of 31 human rights organizations has issued a joint statement expressing strong support for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, following his condemnation of the severe human rights violations in Sudan.

The statement comes in the wake of deadly events in Khartoum on March 21, when General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) regained control of the city. This development was followed by numerous reports of SAF extrajudicial killings of civilians, raising grave concerns about the safety and well-being of non-combatants caught in the conflict.

Türk’s warning about summary executions in several areas of Khartoum underscored the perilous situation faced by civilians, whose suffering has been exacerbated by ongoing violence and insecurity. The High Commissioner called on the international community to act swiftly to protect human rights and ensure justice for the victims of these brutal acts.

The organizations, in their joint statement, urged greater international support for civilians affected by the ongoing conflict and called for an independent investigation into the violations, with those responsible held accountable. They also stressed the importance of holding the authorities in Port Sudan to international human rights standards.

The human rights groups also condemned the international community’s apparent inaction in the face of such atrocities and demanded immediate intervention by global bodies to protect civilians and punish those guilty of perpetrating human rights abuses.

This statement represents a crucial step in raising awareness about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan and the urgent need to protect civilian populations. The support shown for Volker Türk’s call to action highlights the critical need for international intervention and accountability during this time of dire crisis.

As the humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, the statement calls for immediate global action to safeguard innocent lives and bring an end to these grave violations.
