Al-Baraa militants threatens El Fasher with brutal history of massacres

Sudanese media outlets have revealed the intent of the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Al-Baraa Ibn Malik militia to advance towards El Fasher, in North Darfur, fueling fears of further violence in the region.

The militia’s Commander, Almusbah Abuzaid Talha, declared that his forces would march “with full force and confidence” towards El Fasher to conduct “decisive operations to cleanse Darfur.”

This announcement has prompted concerns over potential new violations, particularly considering the militia’s notorious history of brutal acts.

Al-Baraa Ibn Malik has previously committed horrific massacres, which have been condemned by international human rights organizations. Among the most gruesome acts were the beheadings of three young men in El-Obeid, North Kordofan, last February. The men were accused of being affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The militia has also been linked to field executions across Khartoum and Darfur.

Known for its savagery, the militia has been involved in mutilating the bodies of victims, including slashing open the stomachs of fighters and removing their entrails, in an effort to terrorize the populations in its wake.

In October 2024, a disturbing video surfaced showing members of the Al-Baraa Ibn Malik brigade walking among bloodied corpses, further solidifying its reputation for cruelty.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, recent reports indicate that the militia has been trained by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), particularly in the operation of drones. These drones have played a pivotal role in escalating civilian casualties throughout the ongoing conflict.

Additionally, Al-Baraa Ibn Malik has access to incendiary bombs, which have been used in attacks across Khartoum and Darfur, with its most notorious acts being point-blank executions, often accompanied by chants of “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is Great), mimicking acts of terror seen in Syria and Iraq.

The militia comprises jihadists from various factions within the Muslim Brotherhood, including those tied to the secret security service under former President Omar Al-Bashir, known as “Popular Security.”

This service has a well-documented history of human rights violations, further contributing to the militia’s blood-soaked reputation.
