Sudanese intellectual and political researcher Dr Al-Nour Hamad has condemned the Sudanese Armed Forces following reports that dozens of civilians were killed in the Sharshar area of North Kordofan state.
In a Facebook post, Hamad described the reported killings as part of a wider pattern of abuses allegedly committed by the army during Sudan’s continuing war.
“The horrific Sharshar crime, in which the Muslim Brotherhood’s terrorist army killed dozens of civilians, is only the culmination of dozens of previous crimes,” Hamad wrote.
He argued that the military establishment led by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan could not be trusted to restore civilian government.
“Anyone who believes that Burhan’s Brotherhood-controlled army, which is in the grip of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, will restore civilian rule is naive,” he added.
Hamad’s comments followed reports of a series of aerial attacks across North Kordofan between July 24 and 26. The Emergency Lawyers group said strikes had hit civilian vehicles, water facilities, a health centre and a school, causing dozens of deaths. The group attributed several of the attacks to Sudanese army aircraft, although the precise circumstances and casualty figures remain difficult to verify independently.
North Kordofan has become a major front in the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, with civilians increasingly exposed to airstrikes, drones and ground fighting.
Burhan has led Sudan’s military since the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and was a central figure in the October 2021 coup that ended the country’s civilian-led transitional arrangement. Analysts have also reported that Islamist figures associated with Bashir’s former government have regained influence within the army during the war.
Egypt has maintained close relations with Burhan and the Sudanese military, while Saudi Arabia has hosted repeated negotiations seeking to end the war. Hamad’s assertion that the two countries control Burhan represents his own political assessment and has not been independently established.
