Al-Ta’ayshi: Kamil Idris initiative evades peace obligations

Sudan’s “Founding Alliance” government, based in Nyala, has sharply criticised an initiative presented by Dr Kamil Idris to the UN Security Council on behalf of what it described as the “de facto government in Port Sudan,” saying the proposal lacks political and moral logic and represents a clear attempt to evade peace obligations.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mohammed Hassan Al-Ta’ayshi, Prime Minister of the “Government of Peace” under the Founding Alliance (Ta’sis), said the initiative was drafted within the circles of the Islamist movement and later adopted by SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, accusing it of being a tactic to prolong the war and buy time.

“Illegitimate actors”

Al-Ta’ayshi said granting international platforms to what he called “illegitimate actors, coup tools, and those who reject peace obligations” constitutes a blatant violation of the UN Charter and the principles of the African Union, which suspended Sudan’s membership following the October 2021 coup.

He added that providing political or diplomatic cover to what he described as “advocates of war and incubators of extremism and terrorism” is unacceptable and must cease immediately.

“Misleading narratives”

The statement also condemned what Al-Ta’ayshi described as attempts by Burhan’s authorities to promote misleading narratives to the international community and to evade serious efforts aimed at ending the war.

He said the Port Sudan authorities have increasingly used international platforms — most recently a Security Council session convened at their request — to “whitewash their record” and shirk their legal and moral responsibilities.

Support for the Quad initiative

Al-Ta’ayshi praised the initiative put forward by the Quad countries, saying it presents clear principles and a defined roadmap that includes an immediate ceasefire and a binding humanitarian truce.

He said the initiative has received broad support from regional and international institutions, including the African Union and the European Union, as well as wide segments of Sudan’s civilian and political forces.

Speaking on behalf of the Founding Alliance government, Al-Ta’ayshi announced full and sincere approval of the Quad initiative’s principles and expressed readiness to implement them, citing the will of the Sudanese people to end the war and achieve a comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace.

Immediate humanitarian truces

Al-Ta’ayshi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to immediate humanitarian truces and its readiness to engage in urgent and comprehensive peace measures based on the Quad initiative.

He stressed adherence to Sudan’s unity based on the free will of its peoples, justice and equality, and the establishment of a secular state of equal citizenship that recognises diversity and turns it into a source of strength.

Clear humanitarian roadmap

On the humanitarian front, Al-Ta’ayshi called for a clear and binding roadmap to ensure unconditional access for UN agencies and humanitarian organisations to all Sudanese, without discrimination or political or military coercion.

He declared the Founding Alliance government’s full readiness to cooperate unconditionally in delivering aid, while strongly condemning deliberate starvation policies and the use of food and medicine as weapons of war.
