Armed men storm Um Dafuq police station, free detainee

Armed men storm a police station in the border town of Um Dafuq in South Darfur on Thursday, freeing a detainee before fleeing on motorcycles to an unknown location, witnesses said.

According to local residents who spoke to Darfur24, police had earlier arrested a suspect under a warrant linked to the alleged theft of a truck. The suspect later escaped from custody, prompting police—operating under the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—to detain his father in his place.

Sources said the suspect’s brothers then carried out an armed attack on the police station, forcing the release of their father before fleeing the area.

In response, Um Dafuq’s local administration summoned the suspects’ tribal chief and demanded that those responsible be handed over to the authorities.

South Darfur is among five Darfur states, along with large areas of West Kordofan, that remain under RSF control, where the group has established its own police and judicial structures in areas it administers.
