Britain seeks urgent UN Security Council talks on Sudan famine

Britain on Saturday called for urgent United Nations Security Council consultations as famine deepens in Sudan’s North Darfur region.

London, which currently holds the Council presidency and serves as penholder on Sudan, said the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) had confirmed famine conditions in the towns of Amro and Karnoi.

Britain, alongside Bahrain and Denmark, formally requested the consultations, warning of a rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said all warring parties must immediately allow unrestricted humanitarian access to reach starving civilians.

The IPC reported that malnutrition in Amro and Karnoi has surpassed famine thresholds.

Assessments in December found acute malnutrition among children under five at 52.9 percent in Amro and 34 percent in Karnoi, with severe cases widespread.

In November, the IPC declared famine in El Fasher and Kadugli and warned it could spread across Darfur and Kordofan.

Sudan’s government last year suspended cooperation with the IPC, rejecting its findings as inaccurate and harmful to national sovereignty.
