Burhan faces backlash as Kamil Idris pushes election plan

Political tensions with the junta authority in Sudan have intensified after Kamil Idris signalled plans for elections despite the ongoing war.

His statements revived a debate over General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s disputed electoral roadmap and its broader implications.

Officials insist the proposal could pave the way for free and fair elections under international monitoring.

Critics argue that holding elections during active conflict makes any credible democratic process unrealistic.

They highlight widespread displacement, collapsing public services, and insecurity across large parts of the country.

Opposition leader Omar al-Dugair dismissed the plan as detached from realities on the ground.

He said legitimacy lost after the 2021 coup cannot be restored through rushed voting under current conditions.

Instead, he called for a civilian-led transition supported by a broad constitutional consensus.

Analysts stress that a ceasefire and full humanitarian access are necessary before any political process.

They add that inclusive negotiations must take place first to create conditions for meaningful and credible elections.
