Calls to label Sudan’s National Congress and MB as terrorist groups

Yasir Arman, leader of the Popular Movement for Democratic Revolutionary Current, has called for decisive action to end war crimes and genocide committed by both sides in Sudan’s ongoing conflict.

He urged the designation of the dissolved National Congress Party and the Islamic Movement (affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood) as terrorist organizations.

In remarks published by Al-Taghyeer newspaper, Arman stated that the Islamic Movement harbors deep resentment against the Sudanese people who rejected it during a popular revolution.

Instead of reevaluating its failed “Civilization Project”—which led to the secession of South Sudan and atrocities—it has now shifted to adopting tactics resembling those of extremist groups to suppress the December Revolution.

Arman emphasized that the movement and its allies recognize they cannot defeat the December revolutionaries through coups or war. He reiterated the need to label the National Congress Party and the Islamic Movement as terrorist organizations to safeguard national unity across Sudan’s regions.

“We will defeat the war—it won’t defeat us. Our adversaries are those who hijacked the state and its institutions,” Arman asserted.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a conflict between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s forces (SAF), and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with militias allied with the Muslim Brotherhood supporting the SAF.

The fighting has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and displaced around 14 million people, according to the UN and local authorities. A U.S.-led university study estimates the death toll at approximately 130,000, with over 12 million displaced. The UN describes the humanitarian crisis as the world’s largest displacement emergency.
