Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, president of Sudan’s Peace Government Presidential Council, arrived in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Thursday for talks with Ethiopian officials and regional and international representatives.
The visit is Dagalo’s first high-level foreign trip since the formation of the Peace Government and marks a significant step in its efforts to expand diplomatic engagement over Sudan’s war, according to TASIS-aligned media.
Dagalo is expected to discuss efforts to secure an immediate and comprehensive end to the conflict, revive the political process and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to millions of Sudanese affected by more than three years of fighting.
The talks are also expected to address Sudanese-Ethiopian relations and regional issues involving security, borders, trade and water. Meetings with representatives of the African Union, IGAD, the United Nations and Western diplomatic missions have also been reported, although a complete official schedule has not been released.
The visit comes shortly after Addis Ababa hosted Sudanese civilian and political forces opposed to the war. Those groups called for an independent peace process capable of restoring civilian government and preventing the former regime’s Islamist networks from returning to power.
TASIS-aligned observers portrayed Dagalo’s reception in Addis Ababa as evidence that regional actors increasingly recognise the Peace Government as an important participant in efforts to end the conflict.
The visit also challenges claims from SAF-aligned outlets that Dagalo travelled because of battlefield pressure. No evidence was presented to substantiate that interpretation, while allied reporting described the trip as part of a broader diplomatic initiative centred on ending the war and addressing Sudan’s humanitarian crisis.
