In a significant escalation of violence, SAF airstrikes on the city of Al-Koma in North Darfur on Sunday have resulted in the deaths and injuries of dozens of civilians, according to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The RSF accused General al-Burhan’s SAF of carrying out intensive airstrikes, supported by external forces, targeting residential areas in Al-Koma.
The raids, which included five separate bombings, led to widespread destruction of homes and public facilities.
The strikes came amid a wave of protests by Sudanese citizens worldwide, with thousands demonstrating in Brussels outside the European Union headquarters.
Protesters called for international intervention to protect civilians and hold accountable those responsible for the killings of women and children.
The RSF condemned SAF’s actions as a direct violation of international humanitarian law, noting that the strikes intentionally targeted unarmed civilians rather than military objectives. This, the RSF said, amounts to a form of genocide, demanding that the international community and human rights organizations take decisive action to stop the ongoing atrocities.
The airstrikes on Al-Koma follow a deadly raid on a market in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, last week, where over 80 civilians were killed. SAF campaign of indiscriminate airstrikes has continued across various regions, targeting markets, mosques, and residential neighborhoods, with hundreds of casualties reported.
Earlier, the RSF announced that over 2,500 civilians, mostly women and children, have been killed in two months of attacks by the SAF. The RSF has vowed to continue its efforts to dismantle the existing state apparatus and establish a new, just system that ends the marginalization and injustice faced by Sudan’s people.
