Film shows General Burhan’s SAF’s chemical-weapons training

A newly released documentary shows what it says are leaked videos of General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) and intelligence units being coached in the handling of mustard gas, lewisite and other banned agents for use against RSF-held areas, prompting fresh accusations of war crimes.

The footage, filmed inside closed training camps, depicts instructors demonstrating how to deploy the chemicals and issuing target lists that include parts of Darfur, South Kordofan, Khartoum and Blue Nile that slipped from SAF junta control after fighting erupted in April 2023.

Several defectors interviewed on camera claim senior commanders ordered “mass liquidations” with toxins that leave few outward wounds but destroy lungs and internal organs, matching injuries cited in recent medical reports from conflict zones.

The film also displays what it says are internal SAF and security-service memos coordinating the clandestine program and urging strict secrecy to avoid international scrutiny.

Rights groups and Sudanese opposition figures demanded an inquiry led by the United Nations and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. They called the allegations the most serious since Amnesty International’s 2016 report that accused SAF of using chemical agents in Jebel Marra.
