A French intelligence investigation has revealed that a high-level Sudanese political delegation conducted a secret diplomatic mission to Tel Aviv in late June, marking a significant backroom maneuver to influence the future governance of war-torn Sudan.
Findings were published by the investigative platforms Africa Intelligence and Darkbox.
The visiting delegation from the “Sumud” political alliance reportedly comprised prominent leaders Khalid Omar Yusuf, Babiker Faisal, and Taha Othman Ishaq.
Former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, who heads the coalition, was also invited but reportedly declined the mission after being directly notified by an Israeli official.
The covert nature of the trip has already triggered regional repercussions and internal friction.
Kept entirely hidden from the public and the alliance’s own rank-and-file, the mission was exposed to regional neighbors, leading Egyptian authorities to detain and interrogate delegation member Babiker Faisal for four hours upon his subsequent arrival at Cairo Airport.
Diplomatic sources indicate the delegation utilized the Tel Aviv meeting to alter international perceptions of the ongoing Sudanese civil war.
The envoys reportedly framed the Sudanese Armed Forces as allies of Islamist factions, while positioning their own civilian coalition as the sole stable and reliable alternative capable of leading the nation through a post-conflict transition.
