Gunmen attack ICRC convoy in war-torn Darfur, Sudan

Gunmen attacked an International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) team in South Darfur, Sudan, killing two drivers and injuring three other staff members.

The ICRC stated the team was returning from assessing the humanitarian situation in Layba, a region heavily affected by armed violence.

“We are in deep mourning for our dear colleagues,” said Pierre Dorbes, head of the ICRC delegation in Sudan.

“We extend our sincere condolences to their families, and we hope for a speedy recovery for our injured co-workers.”

This attack comes amidst a brutal conflict that has ravaged Sudan for over a year.

Fighting between the Sudanese army and rebel forces led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has displaced millions and caused widespread food shortages. The United Nations has labeled it the “largest displacement crisis in the world.”

The ongoing violence has created a critical humanitarian situation, leaving many at risk of starvation. The ICRC is a vital organization providing aid to those most affected. This attack not only disrupts their vital work but also highlights the deteriorating security situation in the region.
