Guterres vows stronger push for Sudan ceasefire

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pledged intensified efforts to secure an immediate ceasefire in war-ravaged Sudan.

He said the world body was fully committed to rallying diplomatic pressure after nearly three years of devastating civil war.

Since April 2023, General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces have battled fiercely for control of the fractured nation.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands and displaced more than 11 million people, unleashing what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Guterres said the UN was working closely with the African Union, the Arab League and other influential actors to push for peace.

“We must create the conditions to put effective pressure on the two parties,” he told reporters in Ethiopia.

He also warned that foreign powers were fuelling the war’s relentless violence.
