Hausa traditional leaders in eastern Sudan have announced their support for army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to become president, following a conference attended by tribal representatives from Kassala, Gedaref and Red Sea states.
Abdel Moneim Idris Bello, emir of the Hausa community in Sudan, said the nomination was endorsed by councils of elders and tribal leaders from the three states.
The gathering also expressed support for Sudan’s military, while youth representatives called for greater youth participation, peaceful coexistence and efforts to combat hate speech.
The announcement comes amid differing political views over Sudan’s future leadership and the country’s transition to civilian rule.
