Kass secures historic league victory in intense Nyala championship match

The Al-Kawkab Club stadium in Nyala’s Al-Wadi neighborhood erupted with fans Sunday evening for the local league final.

The three-month tournament, organised by the Nyala Football Association, featured 32 teams from South and East Darfur states.

Nyala South and Kass battled to a goalless draw, sending the championship into a tense penalty shootout.

Kass City, 86 kilometres west of Nyala, triumphed in the shootout, claiming the coveted league title.

Katila, last year’s champions, withdrew in solidarity with victims of December’s deadly drone attack, leaving Al-Balabel to fill the spot.

Kass reached the final after a narrow 1-0 win over Baram, while Nyala South edged past Atash camp by the same score.

More than ten thousand spectators packed Al-Kawkab Stadium, one of Nyala’s oldest football venues, creating an electric atmosphere.

The victorious Kass team returned home to cheering fans and celebratory gunfire, marking their win with street-wide celebrations.

The league split 32 teams into five groups, with the top two advancing to the round of 16, intensifying early-round competition.

Quarter-finalists included Nyala Central, Kass, Wad Al-Fursan, Al-Balabel, Nyala North, Baram, Atash, and Nyala South, highlighting Darfur’s football talent.

The tournament united communities across Darfur, showcasing local passion, fierce rivalries, and the spirit of the beautiful game.

Kass’s victory cements their place in regional football history, promising high stakes and renewed excitement in future league editions.
