The South Darfur branch of the Sudanese Red Crescent has dispatched a response team to Tarsin, in Jebel Marra, Central Darfur, to assess and support relief efforts after Sunday’s deadly landslide.
In a statement, the society said the team includes the head of food security, a branch representative, and managers for dead-body management, first aid and risk, and water, sanitation and hygiene. A Red Crescent source said the team is expected to arrive within hours, responding to urgent appeals from national and international organizations and from the Sudanese Agency for Relief and Humanitarian Operations.
Tarsin has been facing a severe humanitarian situation since the landslide—triggered by flash floods—left civilians dead and injured, according to a statement from the civilian authority affiliated with Abdel Wahid Mohamed al-Nur’s Sudan Liberation Movement.
Mujib al-Rahman Abdelrahman, head of that civilian administration, visited the area on Wednesday and said via the administration’s Facebook page that local rescue teams and emergency rooms are continuing efforts to recover bodies and assist victims.
