The international community has largely overlooked the immense human suffering caused by Sudan’s ongoing war, an envoy has warned.
Dirk Sigar, special envoy for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, expressed deep concern during a visit to Khartoum on Saturday.
Sigar said the devastating humanitarian crisis in Sudan has failed to receive the global attention it urgently needs.
He pledged to amplify civilians’ voices and strengthen humanitarian response efforts amid the continuing conflict.
During the visit, Sigar saw local volunteers providing essential medical care in crowded shelters for displaced people.
The Sudanese Red Crescent Society is also conducting sanitation campaigns ahead of the autumn rains to help prevent the spread of disease.
Emergency response teams have held disaster drills to improve their ability to evacuate civilians from areas affected by fighting.
The delegation also inspected the heavily damaged Khartoum headquarters, which is undergoing urgent structural rehabilitation.
Rebuilding the facility is seen as an important step towards restoring essential community services in the war-torn capital.
Despite severe security challenges, local humanitarian workers continue to serve vulnerable communities affected by the conflict.
