Iran-backed militia expanding operations in Sudan, report says

A newly surfaced report indicates that the Al-Baraa Ibn Malik militia, an jihadist faction aligned with General al Burhan’s forces (SAF), is receiving direct training from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), raising concerns over Tehran’s expanding role in Sudan’s conflict.

The training reportedly focuses on drone operations, a critical factor in the ongoing battles across the country.

Social media footage circulating online appears to show a SAF officer acknowledging that Al-Baraa Ibn Malik militants have acquired drone-operating capabilities, further fueling speculation about Iran’s military involvement beyond traditional arms supplies.

In recent weeks, SAF has been observed deploying incendiary weapons in strikes across Khartoum and Darfur, sparking questions about the origins of these munitions.

Analysts suggest the possibility that they are of Iranian manufacture, reinforcing suspicions of Tehran’s direct military support.

Observers warn that Iran’s influence in Sudan may extend beyond battlefield assistance, with strategic implications for the broader region. Control over key locations, including the Red Sea port, could escalate tensions and spark new conflicts in an already volatile area.
