The Rapid Support Forces launched a major attack Saturday on Bir Umm Sulaybah in West Darfur, advancing toward Sudanese Armed Forces’ (SAF) positions.
The assault began with heavy artillery fire before RSF troops moved along northern and southern axes toward the strategic area.
A military source said that the attacking forces advanced from El Geneina.
The fighting marks another escalation in West Darfur, where the RSF and SAF have repeatedly clashed since the war began.
The attack came days after joint forces reported another RSF assault around Bir Saliba and Hajar al-Marfa’in in the state.
Bir Umm Sulaybah lies about 30 kilometres north of El Geneina, making it strategically important for military movements toward the capital.
The area also links El Geneina with northwestern parts of West Darfur, including Jebel Moon and Kulbus.
Its location gives the fighting wider significance, as control of the area could affect troop movements and supply routes.
The latest advance adds another flashpoint to Sudan’s western front, where rival forces continue fighting for strategic ground.
