Rumours spark controversy over Idris WhatsApp claims in Sudan

In Sudan’s tense political climate, rumours about the General Abdel Fattah al Burhan-led junta government’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris have sparked controversy and public uncertainty.

Reports claimed he left WhatsApp groups linked to junta government work, fuelling speculation about leadership stability.

The claims spread quickly after earlier reports of his travel to London.

Unverified accounts also suggested he had withdrawn from key communication channels used in governance coordination, while names of possible successors began circulating.

Observers said the reports reflected wider anxiety over political and economic instability in the country.

However, his media office rejected the allegations, calling them false, baseless, and politically motivated. It stressed Idris continues his duties normally and does not use such WhatsApp groups.

Officials also warned of legal action against those spreading misinformation.

Analysts say the episode highlights how quickly digital rumours can escalate in fragile political environments, shaping public perception before facts are confirmed.
