Security authorities on Wednesday released Islamist leader Naji Abdullah after three months in detention over controversial public remarks.
During his detention, Abdullah appeared in a video wearing the uniform of General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army, where he made politically charged statements that sparked widespread criticism.
He said he was ready to fight alongside Iran if the United States or Israel intervened militarily in Sudan.
Burhan’s army quickly distanced itself from the remarks, stressing that they did not represent the institution.
His release comes amid legal uncertainty, with authorities providing no details on the proceedings or any conditions attached to his freedom.
The move has renewed debate over the influence of Islamist figures within Sudan’s fractured political and military landscape as the country’s war continues.
