Bombings in South Sudan’s Fangak county on Saturday left at least seven people dead and 20 injured, while also destroying the county’s last remaining hospital and pharmacy, according to Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).
The charity reported that a bomb was dropped on the pharmacy, completely destroying it and damaging the nearby hospital. Another drone strike targeted Old Fangak, a town in the Greater Upper Nile region, where the casualties occurred.
MSF stated that Old Fangak Hospital was the only medical facility serving a population of over 110,000 people, who already had limited access to healthcare.
The attackers’ identities and motives remain unclear, and both government and army spokespeople could not be immediately reached for comment.
South Sudan officially ended its five-year civil war with a peace deal in 2018, between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those supporting First Vice President Riek Machar. However, the recent arrest of Machar on charges of rebellion has raised concerns about the potential for renewed conflict.
