South Sudan goes on alert after DRC confirms Ebola outbreak

South Sudan is on alert as neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo confirms a new Ebola outbreak, Africa CDC says.

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have confirmed a new Ebola virus disease outbreak, Africa CDC said Friday.

About 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths have been reported, including four deaths among laboratory-confirmed cases so far.

Cases are concentrated in Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, with additional suspected infections reported in Bunia, Ituri province.

Authorities warn of wider spread risks due to population movement, insecurity, weak contact tracing, and border proximity.

Health officials from DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan are coordinating with partners to strengthen surveillance and preparedness.

Africa CDC says it is working with national authorities and partners to contain the outbreak as quickly as possible.

An urgent high-level coordination meeting was scheduled Friday with WHO and regional health authorities from affected countries.

Health agencies urged communities to report symptoms early, avoid contact with suspected cases, and follow safety guidelines.

Ebola is a severe, often fatal disease transmitted through bodily fluids or contaminated materials, with previous outbreak declared ended in Kasai.
