Sudan on Wednesday strongly condemned what it described as a Houthi drone attack targeting the holy city of Mecca, expressing full solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
In a statement, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said targeting Mecca and the Grand Mosque represented a serious violation of the sanctity of Islamic holy sites and a dangerous provocation to Muslims worldwide.
“The sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques and the holy sites, as well as the security and safety of those visiting them, must not be threatened or violated,” the ministry said.
The statement warned that exposing Islamic holy sites to military attacks or involving them in regional conflicts represented a dangerous escalation.
Sudan called for the sanctity of religious sites to be respected and protected from further escalation, saying this was essential to safeguarding the security and stability of Saudi Arabia and the wider region.
The government also expressed what it called its full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and backed Riyadh’s right to take measures it considers necessary to protect its security, territorial integrity and the Two Holy Mosques.
