A prominent water resources expert has warned that Sudan could face a repeat of the severe water crisis that struck the country in 2020.
Dr Khalid Al-Nour Ali said Ethiopia’s unilateral filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) could trigger serious instability across the region.
Water levels in the Blue Nile have recently fallen sharply amid Ethiopian water storage operations, raising concerns over downstream supplies.
However, seasonal forecasts point to highly volatile weather conditions, meaning dry riverbeds could quickly turn into destructive floods.
The expert said millions of people remain vulnerable to both drought and flooding without a binding agreement on data sharing between the countries.
He also called for urgent technical adjustments to Sudan’s domestic dams to respond to rapidly changing conditions along the Nile.
