Sudan grid instability triggers widespread power blackouts

Sudan’s power grid is under severe strain as reported turbine stoppages at Merowe Dam and expanding transmission faults trigger widespread instability.

Sudan’s junta-led government is seeking emergency generation options amid shortages, limited maintenance capacity, and war-related disruptions affecting repair work.

The Sudan Electricity Holding Company confirmed a transformer failure that caused major outages in Northern State, with repeated blackouts across Khartoum, River Nile, Northern, and Red Sea states.

Officials say some outages stem from load management, while Kassala, Al-Qadarif, and parts of Al-Jazirah remain relatively stable due to supply from Upper Atbara and Roseires dams.

The grid has suffered multiple nationwide blackouts since February, with further pressure from damaged infrastructure and rising electricity tariffs introduced on May 1.
