The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said Sudan’s electricity network has sustained damage estimated at up to $3 billion since the outbreak of war in 2023, worsening access to power across large parts of the country.
In a statement, the UN agency said the destruction has deepened Sudan’s electricity crisis, leaving many communities facing prolonged disruptions and reduced access to energy services.
The UNDP also noted that despite a global decline in solar panel prices, costs inside Sudan have risen sharply due to the collapse of the exchange rate, import and transportation challenges, limited financing opportunities, and the spread of low-quality products in local markets.
The agency warned that these factors are hampering efforts to expand alternative energy solutions at a time when many Sudanese households and businesses increasingly rely on solar power amid the ongoing conflict.
