Sudan wants membership reinstatement for AU mediation acceptance

Sudan’s military leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has asserted that Sudan will only entertain the African Union’s proposal to resolve the conflict if the continental bloc reinstates its full membership.

The AU had suspended Sudan following the military takeover in 2021.

General Burhan held discussions with members of the recently formed AU High-Level Panel on the Resolution of the Conflict in Sudan, headed by Mohamed Ibn Chambas, on Sunday.

This three-member panel was established by the AU Commission in January with the aim of facilitating dialogue, reinstating constitutional order, and collaborating with Sudanese stakeholders and the international community to achieve lasting peace.

A statement on the ruling Sudanese Sovereign Council’s Facebook page conveyed that General Burhan expressed “Sudan’s confidence in the AU and the potential solutions it can provide to end the war, but only if the state regains its full membership and the organization treats it as such.”

The statement further highlighted that Ibn Chambas reiterated the AU’s commitment to assisting in ending the conflict and restoring stability in Sudan.
