Sudanese man dies in Egypt custody amid refugee scrutiny

A Sudanese man has died in custody in Egypt, according to the Egyptian Network for Human Rights, raising fresh concerns over the treatment of refugees in detention.

The organisation identified the man as Al-Nadhir Al-Sadiq, saying he held valid Egyptian residency at the time of his arrest.

It described his death as the second involving a Sudanese detainee in Egyptian facilities within a week.

Last week, 67-year-old Mubarak Qamar al-Din Abu Huwa died at a police station in Al-Shorouk following his arrest.

The network said Abu Huwa also had legal residency and suffered from health conditions that required medical attention.

In a statement, the group held Egyptian authorities responsible for both deaths and called for an independent investigation and accountability.

It also urged an end to what it described as arbitrary arrests targeting refugees and asylum seekers.

Human rights organisations report that hundreds of Sudanese and other asylum seekers are currently facing detention and deportation proceedings in Egypt.

Advocacy groups say restrictions have tightened significantly since late 2025, reshaping the environment for displaced communities.

The Refugee Platform in Egypt said enforcement measures have shifted from sporadic arrests to what it called systematic forced deportations.

It alleged that Sudanese and Syrian communities have been specifically targeted in several governorates.

Sudan’s ambassador to Cairo, Emad Adawi, said around 400 Sudanese nationals are currently being held in Egyptian prisons.

He added that nearly 3,000 Sudanese were deported in 2025, signalling a sharp increase in removals.
