Sudan faces a looming famine as the world turns a blind eye, warned Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Secretary-General Jan Egeland during a recent visit to the conflict-torn nation.
“This is the worst humanitarian crisis globally, yet it’s met with deafening silence,” Egeland said, describing mass violence, displacement, and starvation. In October alone, over 2,500 people were killed, and 250,000 displaced.
More than 24 million Sudanese face acute food insecurity, with 1.5 million nearing famine. Egeland condemned both the SAF and RSF for blocking aid, accusing them of weaponizing hunger.
Egeland urged immediate global action, saying, “Tweets of concern are not enough. Sudan needs a massive emergency response before famine claims an entire generation.”
