Senior figures from Sudan’s dissolved National Congress Party (NCP) have issued conflicting statements following recent remarks by SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, highlighting divisions within the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood.
Some Islamist leaders fiercely criticized Burhan, while others sought to de-escalate tensions, underscoring a tactical divide.
Burhan’s speech, in which he rejected any return to power for the NCP and the “Taqaddum” civilian coalition, provoked a swift reaction from Islamist factions, revealing their political ambitions amid Sudan’s ongoing war.
The speech, delivered at the conclusion of political consultations in Port Sudan on Saturday, warned Muslim Brotherhood cadres against exploiting the conflict for political gain.
Burhan also accused the civilian Taqaddum coalition of aligning with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), deepening the rift between military-aligned factions.
In response, the NCP issued a statement condemning Burhan’s comments, accusing him of pandering to weaker political factions such as Taqaddum and the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC).
The statement warned that political infighting could undermine Sudan’s broader national struggle.
Ahmed Haroun, the NCP’s acting leader and an ICC fugitive, reaffirmed his commitment to a democratic return through elections, framing the party’s ambitions as part of Sudan’s national interest.
Other NCP figures, including Hamid Mumtaz and Haj Majid Suwar, dismissed Burhan’s remarks as a betrayal, accusing him of siding with former political adversaries.
On the battlefield, Islamist militia leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fighting alongside the SAF. Misbah Abu Zeid Talha, commander of the Al-Bara bin Malik Brigade, insisted that his forces were fighting for religion and country, not political rewards.
As Sudan’s war drags on, the conflicting reactions from Islamist leaders reflect deepening fractures within the country’s political landscape, raising questions about the future role of Islamists and Muslim Brotherhood in post-war governance.
