Sudan’s ousted dictator Bashir moved to Merowe Hospital

Former Sudanese dictator Omer al-Bashir, along with three senior officials, has been moved from military detention to a hospital in Merowe, Northern State, due to deteriorating health conditions, according to Bashir’s lawyer.

Al-Bashir, ex-Defence Minister Abdelrahim Mohamed Hussein, and former Youth and Sports Minister Youssef Abdel Fattah were transferred from the Wadi Seidna military facility, following a medical report that indicated they needed care unavailable at the military hospital.

Former Vice President Bakri Hassan Saleh had been moved to the same hospital three weeks earlier.

Bashir’s lawyer said the former dictator, along with the others, is suffering from age-related health complications that require treatment abroad. He called for their release, citing over five years of detention despite a prior decision to free them.

Bashir and other regime figures were initially held in Kober prison after his ousting in April 2019, but escaped amid conflict in April 2023.
