The Coordination of Civilian Democratic Forces, known as Taqaddum, has announced its decision to dissolve its coordinating body and split into two separate political entities due to internal disagreements over the formation of an alternative government.
The decision was made during a virtual meeting on February 9, 2025, led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.
The coalition, established in October 2023, has been striving to end the conflict that erupted in April 2023 between General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), aiming to restore civilian rule.
The internal debate centered on whether to establish an alternative government outside Sudan to challenge the SAF-led transitional sovereign council based in Port Sudan. The leadership council concluded that the coalition was divided into two opposing views on this matter. Consequently, they decided to separate, allowing each faction to operate independently under new names and organizational structures.
“From this moment forward, each group will act in accordance with its own vision on ending the war, achieving lasting peace, and establishing a sustainable democratic civilian government,” the statement read. It also emphasized the commitment to countering attempts by the former regime and its affiliates to regain influence.
Both factions are expected to announce their respective political and organizational frameworks, along with their new identities, in the coming days.
The split reflects the challenges faced by Sudanese pro-democracy groups in maintaining unity amid differing strategies to address the country’s ongoing conflict and political crisis.
