Tasis warns AU members against legitimising Sudan coup leaders

The Sudanese Founding Alliance (Tasis) accused Egypt and other AU members of trying to bypass Sudan’s suspension following the October 25, 2021 coup.

The suspension, imposed after the military toppled Sudan’s transitional government, blocks Sudan from AU membership until civilian rule is restored.

Tasis said Mohi El-Din Salem, linked to the group behind the coup, is scheduled to address the African Union Peace and Security Council on February 12, 2026.

The coalition condemned the planned address as a violation of AU charters and the resolution suspending Sudan’s membership.

It highlighted Egypt’s prior attempts in October 2024, when its AU Council presidency sought to establish an AU office in Port Sudan.

Tasis denounced repeated efforts to legitimise the coup, the terrorist group, and ongoing conflict against Sudanese civilians.

Egypt’s political, military, and diplomatic backing, the coalition said, breaches international norms and undermines peace efforts.

Dr. Alaa El-Din Awad Naqd, Tasis spokesperson, warned that tolerance of such manoeuvres emboldens actors threatening Sudan’s stability.

The alliance urged the AU and global community to enforce the 2021 suspension and defend civilian-led governance, framing resistance as essential for Sudan’s democratic future.
