Unidentified gunmen have shot dead a trader inside his home in Sodari, North Kordofan, amid mounting concerns over killings, robberies and lawlessness in areas recently brought under Sudanese army control.
The victim, identified as Haroun Mohammed Haroun, was allegedly targeted following several earlier attempts by armed men to attack his property and steal from his business, local Sudanese media reported Thursday.
According to the victim’s father, gunmen had previously attacked the family’s home but were driven away.
The attackers later attempted to rob Haroun’s shop, where he and fellow traders reportedly resisted them.
The armed men subsequently returned to his residence, where one of them opened fire during another confrontation, killing him at the scene.
The identity of the attackers and their affiliations remain unknown.
Local sources said Haroun originally came from the Kalma displacement camp in South Darfur’s Beleil locality before moving to Sodari in 2010, where he established himself as a trader.
His killing comes weeks after the Sudanese army and allied armed groups took control of Sodari in early September following fighting with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Residents have reported several killings and robberies involving unidentified armed men since the change in territorial control.
The incident has renewed concerns over civilian protection and the ability of security forces to prevent violence and criminal activity in areas affected by Sudan’s continuing conflict.
