Turkey has provided 5,450 tents for displaced families in North and East Darfur, Sudan’s state news agency SUNA reported on Thursday, citing the Darfur regional government’s Humanitarian Aid Commission.
The shipment, supported by the Turkish government and its Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), forms part of a wider Turkish-funded project to supply 30,000 tents across Darfur and Kordofan.
Abdel Bagi Mohammed Hamed, the regional director of social welfare and humanitarian affairs coordinator, thanked Turkey and AFAD for responding to appeals from the Darfur authorities. He also praised the International Organization for Migration for helping implement the broader shelter project.
Hamed said the assistance had arrived at a critical time, as seasonal rains and fires at displacement camps had left thousands of families without adequate shelter.
He called on international and local aid organisations and donors to urgently provide additional shelter materials to displaced communities in Um Baru, Al-Malha, Karnoy, Al-Tina and Kutum in North Darfur, where humanitarian conditions are deteriorating amid continued displacement.
The commission said it was prepared to facilitate the delivery of aid to affected communities, adding that sustained humanitarian assistance was essential to ease suffering and protect the dignity of displaced families.
