The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has voiced strong support for Turkey’s diplomatic efforts to resolve Sudan’s escalating crisis while taking aim at the General al-Burhan’s Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) for their failure to engage in peace negotiations.
In a statement released by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the UAE reaffirmed its commitment to working with Turkey and other regional and international actors to halt the devastating conflict between the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The war, which has plunged Sudan into chaos, has left millions in dire need of humanitarian aid.
“The UAE is fully prepared to cooperate with Turkish-led efforts and any diplomatic initiatives to end the conflict in Sudan and find a comprehensive solution,” the statement read.
However, the UAE sharply criticized the SAF for boycotting recent peace talks organized under the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan (ALPS) Group in Geneva. The SAF’s absence, the UAE said, underscores their “blatant disregard for the suffering of the Sudanese people” and their unwillingness to prioritize peace over power struggles.
The UAE called for an immediate ceasefire and a cessation of hostilities, urging both factions to commit to intra-Sudanese dialogue to address the aspirations of the Sudanese people for security, development, and a transition to civilian-led governance.
“The Sudanese Armed Forces’ refusal to participate in peace talks demonstrates their reluctance to engage in meaningful dialogue, prolonging a catastrophic humanitarian crisis,” the statement added, pointing to widespread devastation and civilian casualties caused by the conflict.
The UAE emphasized its alignment with mechanisms proposed by the ALPS Group and the Jeddah Declaration, highlighting the urgent need for regional cooperation to end the violence. It also reiterated the necessity of inclusive negotiations involving all political factions, urging warring parties to respect prior commitments.
As the humanitarian toll in Sudan mounts, with millions displaced and vital infrastructure destroyed, the UAE called on the SAF and RSF to return to negotiations without delay. “Dialogue and negotiations remain the only path to securing a political process and achieving lasting peace,” the ministry concluded.
The UAE’s rebuke of the SAF comes as international frustration grows over General al-Burhan’s continued resistance to engage in peace talks, with Sudan teetering on the brink of collapse.
